Maybe I’ll just start titling all my posts with Broadway song lyrics from shows I only have lukewarm feelings about… yeah, go ahead and hate me, I’m not a huge Evita fan either…
Anyway. That’s not the point of this post.
The point of this post is to explain what’s been going on in my life the past month, and where I’m going from here (at least, where I think/plan on going and what general direction my compass seems to be pointing…)
After nearly six years*, at the end of April 2018, my time working in the video game industry came to an end.
*If you want to get really technical, which I like to do, it was 5 years, 9 months, and 30 days.
Now, I’m not being melodramatic about my future job prospects or potential. Moving over to gaming was a huge shift for me, and I wasn’t really sure where it was going to take me. So, I worked hard, I learned a lot, I met amazing people, I pushed myself, I tried new things, and I really feel like I’m done now.
I’m pointing this out up front because I know I have a lot of social media followers and blog readers who stumbled upon me because I worked for a video game company. So, if that was your only reason for being here (or following me on Twitter or Instagram or Facebook), then I’m guessing this might be goodbye. You don’t HAVE TO leave by any means, but aside from an occasional “HEY GUESS WHAT I FINALLY DID IN STARDEW VALLEY!” or maybe sometimes RT’ing my friends who do still work in the industry, I won’t be talking about gaming much at all. So if that was your only/primary reason for being here…um, bye?
Now, for those of you who decide you DO want to stick around (yay!), I suppose now is the time to explain what the hell I WILL be talking about moving forward. (This all goes for the blog/site + my social media channels)
Well, books and writing, first and foremost. I love books. I live for books. And I am a writer. That’s my heart, my soul, and my life’s true passion, so that’s going to be my main focus professionally going forward. I might talk about any freelance work I do if/when it’s appropriate, and give some sneak peeks into my own projects as well.
I’m also setting up a Patreon with special rewards (like a flash fiction piece or a six word story or an exclusive blog every month) for anyone who subscribes, so keep an eye out for more on that if you’re interested.
Next up is food and fitness. If you’ve been here a while, you know I became a Beachbody Coach back in 2015, and I’m not being hyperbolic when I say it changed my life. It brought me a community of people who have encouraged me to grow and change in ways that I thought were no longer possible. It’s been a long, slow journey but I’ve come to realize that working out + eating well are CRUCIAL for me to be successful in ALL AREAS OF MY LIFE. When I’m focusing on good food and good form, I have more energy, I sleep better, I’m more creative, I’m more focused, I’m calmer, I’m nicer… I’m just a better person. So, of course, I’m going to talk about all the things that got me to this point and are keeping me moving forward.
Under this category, I’ll include my love of wine and my love of trying new restaurants. I’ll share about those too.
Beyond that, I just like talking about my life. So you might see some travel posts, or parties and holidays, or cool stuff I’m doing around my house, or crafts I make. And chances are very good I’ll talk TV and movies, because I looooove TV and movies. That’ll all be sprinkled throughout, of course.
I’ve also transitioned back into academia and am teaching online, but to be honest, I probably won’t talk about that much here. I might on social media if I see something amazing I want to RT/share about education in general, and I may (often?) post about how I’m procrastinating from grading papers (yes, students, your professors procrastinate too…).
So, what will your blogging schedule be?
Hahahahahahaha. No. This blog is for me. It’s here when I want it, and if I’ve got something I just HAVE TO share, it’ll be here. But this is basically like me letting you read a page in my journal, not something to expect updates from every M-W-F-S or whatever.
Might all this change again in the future? Sure! Six years ago, I never imagined I’d be starting a (albeit temporary) career in video gaming, and six MONTHS ago I didn’t even know what my life would look like right now. But this is where I’m at, and the direction I’m headed, and I’m thankful for anyone who wants to come along for the ride.
Here we go…
